Session 1: The Shipwreck

Session 1 covered Episodes 1 through 4 of the Treasure Hunt adventure module (N4). The party began as shipwrecked slaves and ended descending into the catacombs beneath the Manor of the Sea King.

Episode 1: Sea and Storm

The Shipwreck

The party awoke enslaved in the hold of the pirate galley The Dorak, which had run aground on a mysterious island during a massive storm. Captain Dorak Longspeak was lost; all crew and most slaves had been washed overboard. Mira's bunk buckled in the crash — she broke free, grabbed the keys, and freed the party from their shackles.

The party had nothing — no armour, no weapons, no equipment.

Scavenging

The party searched the slave hold and found wood clubs and chains. Finn snuck to the stern hold and recovered the adventure's first real weapons: a heavy crossbow, 50 quarrels, and a chest containing the captain's log, navigational charts, and a spellbook (given to Mira).

Battle on the Beach: Hafkris

Hafkris, the half-orc jailer and sole surviving pirate (8 HP), was spotted on the beach — drunk, with a broadsword.

Finn shot him from cover with the crossbow: rolled 19, hit, 2 damage (Hafkris to 6/8 HP). The enraged half-orc charged toward the galley.

The party set an ambush in the hold, but Hafkris was not surprised (rolled 9). He won initiative (6 vs 9).

Round 1: Hafkris missed Zeale (rolled 9, needed 13). All four party members missed with clubs (rolled 5, 10, 10, 5 — needed 14 due to -4 non-proficiency).

Round 2: Party won initiative (4 vs 9). Finn reloading. Zeale missed (rolled 2). Marcus hit (rolled 16, 4 damage). Mira hit (rolled 16, 3 damage). Hafkris dropped to -1 HP — defeated.

Loot: Studded leather armour, broadsword, dagger. Zeale took the armour and broadsword. Finn took the dagger and kept the crossbow.

Melisana and the Journey East

Melisana of Ventris introduced herself — daughter of merchant Melkeras, promising 100 gp per person for safe passage. She deduced a port was most likely on the sheltered east or south coast. The party headed east, crossing low western rocks and hilly terrain.

They heard sounds of battle beyond a hill — grunting voices and steel on steel. Episode 2 begins.

Episode 2: Orc-Goblin Battle & The Goblins

Observation from the Hilltop

The party climbed to position B (hilltop with boulder cover) and observed: 12 goblins vs 6 orcs battling in a ravine below. An old man (Keestake, identity unknown) was spotted tied up 50 feet behind the orc lines.

Finn's Stealth Rescue

Finn volunteered to sneak behind enemy lines alone. Move Silently: rolled 45 (needed 75+ to be detected) — clean success. He cut Keestake's bonds and brought him back unseen.

Keestake introduced himself: claimed 60 years alone on the island, knew of a temple (shelter, few hours away) and a boat hidden in catacombs beneath the Sea King's manor.

The Battle Plays Out

The party watched five turns of orc-goblin combat. All 6 orcs were killed. 7 goblins were killed. 5 wounded goblins remained in the ravine, stripping the dead.

Combat: Party vs 5 Goblin Survivors

Goblins not surprised (rolled 8). Initiative tied (2 vs 2) — simultaneous actions.

Round 1 (Simultaneous):

  • Finn missed (rolled 4). Zeale missed (rolled 7)
  • Marcus killed Goblin 3 (rolled 14, 4 damage). Mira killed Goblin 4 (rolled 19, 6 damage)
  • Goblin 1 missed Zeale. Goblin 2 hit Marcus for 4 damage (8 to 4 HP)
  • Goblin 5 hit Mira for 5 damage (4 to -1 HP) — MIRA DYING

Rounds 2-6:

  • Round 2: Finn killed Goblin 1 (crossbow, natural 20)
  • Round 3: Zeale killed Goblin 2 (broadsword, rolled 18)
  • Round 4: Goblin 5 hit Zeale for 6 damage (11 to 5 HP)
  • Round 6: Marcus killed the last goblin (rolled 16, 4 damage)
  • Mira bled from -1 to -6 HP. First stabilization attempt failed (rolled 20), second succeeded (rolled 6)

Loot: Cloaks, spears, daggers, axes, bardiches, padded armour, short bows, arrows. Zeale took a spear (proficient). Marcus took padded armour and battle axe. Finn picked up the short bow.

Episode 3: Temple of the Goddess

Arrival

Keestake guided the party several hours to the Temple of the Goddess — a two-story white stone building, mostly intact. Mira was still unconscious at -6 HP, laid on a stone bench while the party explored.

Exploration

The party explored room by room across both floors. No enemies were encountered.

  • Hidden compartment (Room 11): Finn attempted Find Traps — rolled 26/100, needed 75+. NOT FOUND. Zeale also searched — rolled 3/6. Not found.
  • Library (Room 17): Found 3 books on island history (10 gp each) and 1 prayer book containing a single-use Bless spell. Marcus took the prayer book.
  • Kitchen (Room 9): Large fireplace. Keestake settled in here.

The Goddess Appears

In the Meditation Chamber (Room 14), the Goddess of the island appeared. She warned the party: three days to escape before she destroys the island. She granted each party member a one-time divine boon equivalent to a 1st-level spell.

Zeale asked the goddess for direct help fighting creatures. She refused: "I am forbidden from direct intervention in mortal conflicts. But my blessing will aid you."

Healing Mira

Marcus immediately used his divine boon (Cure Light Wounds) on the dying Mira: rolled 1 — healed only 1 HP. Mira at -5 HP, still unconscious. Marcus's boon spent.

Melisana used her divine boon on Mira: rolled 8 (maximum!) — Mira healed to 3 HP, conscious at last. Melisana's boon spent.

Overnight Rest

The party rested in the Meditation Chamber. No encounters (temple protected after goddess's visit). Mira studied her spellbook, memorizing Magic Missile.

Overnight healing: Zeale 5 to 6, Marcus 4 to 5, Mira 3 to 4 (full), Finn 6/6.

Day 1 of 3 begins.

Episode 4: Manor of the Sea King

Approach

The party departed the temple at dawn, guided north by Keestake through hills, avoiding patrols. After a half-day march, they reached the Manor of the Sea King — smoke rising from within, guards at the main entrance.

Keestake described his plan: follow a ravine to the southwest wall, enter through Room 18 (servants' wing, loose window bars), then navigate to Room 38 (storage room) where a trapdoor leads to the catacombs. He estimated 5-8 orcs in the barracks and small patrols in the corridors.

Entry (Room 18)

An orc guard investigated noise above but was called away. The party pulled the loose bars and entered Room 18 (servants' dormitory). Keestake was eager — almost suspiciously so. Marcus noted his nervous energy; Keestake deflected, saying he'd waited 60 years to leave.

Searching the Servants' Wing (Rooms 18-23)

The dormitories were ruins — overturned bed frames, rotted mattresses, broken crockery. Nothing of value in any room. Keestake found his own quarters (Room 19) destroyed by the orcs and mourned the loss of his 60-year sanctuary.

The Goblin Patrol

Moving through the servants' corridor toward Room 38, Finn detected approaching footsteps — a 3-goblin patrol, 20 paces away. The party ducked into an empty room to hide.

Marcus's battle axe handle scraped the stone doorframe. Goblin alertness check: rolled 1 — worst result for the party. The goblins heard it.

One goblin crept to investigate. The party held perfectly still, but with 60-foot infravision, the goblin spotted their heat signatures and shrieked an alarm. The other two goblins rushed forward with drawn swords.

Combat: Party vs 3-Goblin Patrol

Initiative tied (9 vs 9) — simultaneous actions.

Round 1 (Simultaneous):

  • Zeale missed Goblin 1 (rolled 9+1=10, needed 14). Marcus missed Goblin 2 (rolled 12-4=8, needed 14). Finn missed Goblin 3 (rolled 4, needed 14)
  • Goblin 1 hit Zeale for 5 damage (6 to 1 HP — critically wounded)
  • Goblin 2 missed Marcus (rolled 1). Goblin 3 missed Finn (rolled 1)
  • All party attacks missed. Zeale at 1 HP.

Party chose to FLEE toward Room 38.

Parting Attacks:

  • Goblin 1 vs Zeale: rolled 10, needed 13 — miss (Zeale survives at 1 HP)
  • Goblin 2 vs Marcus: rolled 4, needed 12 — miss
  • Goblin 3 vs Finn (AC 10, lost DEX while fleeing): rolled 13, needed 10 — HIT! 6 damage. Finn drops from 6 to 0 HP — UNCONSCIOUS, collapsed in the corridor

Round 2: Goblins won initiative (1 vs 9).

  • Goblin 1 struck unconscious Finn (auto-hit): 2 damage. Finn to -2 HP, bleeding out
  • Zeale used his divine boon (CLW on self): rolled 4, healed to 5 HP. Boon spent. Charged back but couldn't attack this round
  • Marcus followed. Mira preparing to cast
  • Finn bled to -3 HP

Round 3: Party won initiative (3 vs 7).

  • Mira cast Magic Missile on Goblin 3: auto-hit, 3+1=4 damage. Goblin 3 KILLED (3 HP). Her only spell slot, now spent
  • Zeale missed Goblin 1 (rolled 9+1=10). Marcus missed Goblin 2 (rolled 13-4=9)
  • Goblin 1 missed Zeale (rolled 11). Goblin 2 hit Marcus with natural 20 for 1 damage (5 to 4 HP)
  • Finn bled to -4 HP

Round 4: Goblins won initiative (2 vs 5).

  • Goblin 1 missed Zeale (rolled 2). Goblin 2 hit Marcus for 1 (4 to 3 HP)
  • Zeale killed Goblin 1 with spear (rolled 16+1=17, 6 damage vs 5 HP)
  • Marcus missed Goblin 2 (rolled 3-4=-1)
  • Finn bled to -5 HP

Round 5: Goblins won initiative (4 vs 7).

  • Goblin 2 failed morale and fled. Zeale parting attack: rolled 18+1=19, hit for 2 damage (5 to 3 HP). Goblin 2 wounded but escaped. Marcus missed (rolled 17-4=13)
  • Finn bled to -6 HP. 4 rounds from death.

Round 6: Zeale chased the fleeing goblin (movement 9 vs 6, caught quickly).

  • Zeale killed Goblin 2 with spear: rolled 19+1=20, 3 damage. All 3 goblins eliminated
  • Marcus cast Cure Light Wounds on Finn: rolled 4, healed to -2 HP. Stabilized.

Room 38 and the Trapdoor

The party grabbed Finn and rushed into Room 38 (storage room). Mira recovered Finn's dropped crossbow and dagger. Melisana barricaded the door.

Marcus cast his second and final CLW on Finn: rolled 8 (maximum!) — Finn healed from -2 to 6 HP, fully conscious. Both CLW slots now spent.

A new goblin/orc patrol reached the corridor and slammed against the barricaded door. Keestake opened the trapdoor — cold air rising from below, rough-hewn steps descending into darkness.

Keestake insisted on going first. The party descended 60 feet into the catacombs.
